I have no commercial IT experience, how do I find an entry level role?
Our advice is to find a way of gaining work experience by approaching local companies directly to see if they have any need for a candidate looking to gain work experience for a month or two. You can find details of relevant local companies on websites such as Applegate or Yell.
You may also wish to consider voluntary work through an organisation such as www.it4communities.org.uk or indeed offer to provide some free IT support for a local School or College on a part time basis.

Do I need a degree in IT?
A degree is always useful, especially if you wish to go in to areas such as Software Development or Web Development but entry level positions can be found by starting out in IT Helpdesk for example.

Which University should I attend to study Computer Science?
Clearly much will depend on your UCAS points, location and indeed the content of the course but useful resources can be found on both the Times and Guardian websites. For further information, please click either of the following links:

What do employers look for from an IT Graduate?
Obviously your Educational background, choice of Degree and results throughout the course will be of great importance. We also strongly advise candidates to look at gaining some relevant commercial experience as part of their degree, be it in the holidays or ideally from a Placement Year in industry. This is increasingly sought after by employers and will often distinguish you from other Graduates.

Which IT Certifications / Courses should I take?
It is impossible for us to provide concrete advice as to which courses and certifications are most in demand and there is no one answer as to which course or training provider is the best.
Currently there is a large demand from employers for candidates with Microsoft certifications such as MCP, MCDST, MCSA or MCSE but it is absolutely crucial that you look at obtaining relevant work experience to back up the theoretical knowledge you will gain from such courses.
